Samantha Wallace Sharpe ’09, a trainee in the research laboratory at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, took first place at the 10th International Symposium on Recent Advances in Otitis Media. Sam received first place for her oral presentation: “Nontypeable Haemophilus Influenzae Outer Membrane Vesicles Contain Virulence-Associated Proteins and Adversely Affect Epithelial Cells.” |
Oksana Pelts ’09 (Art History major) succeeded in a job market that has been particularly challenging for people seeking careers in the arts. Her résumé was enhanced by two internships she completed through OWU’s New York Arts Program, one at the Whitney Museum of American Art and one at the Brooklyn Museum. She is now the Fine Art Sales Director at Trademark Global, Inc., in Cleveland, Ohio. |

Amanda Thompson ’09 (Politics and Government major) interned in the office of U.S. Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn through OWU’s Wesleyan in Washington program. Blackburn then offered Amanda a summer job as a campaign scheduler and wrote her a law school recommendation. Amanda is currently attending Wake Forest University School of Law. |
Farooq Busari ’10 (Economics Management major) is the founder of the nonprofit organization Shakepoverty, dedicated to eliminating poverty in sub-Saharan Africa and based on the premise that “poverty can be ended, not by a handful of people, but with millions of handshakes” and the commitment they symbolize. Stanford and Columbia have joined OWU as the first universities in the U.S. to establish Shakepoverty chapters. |

Pooja Dutt ’09 (Zoology major, India) earned her master’s in wildlife conservation from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia in 2011, and is currently the Development Associate at the University of New South Wales Foundation.
Syed Usman Javaid ’10 (Economics and International Studies double major, Pakistan) is enrolled in Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
Max Schroeder ’09 (Microbiology major) is in the Ph.D. program in microbiology and molecular genetics at Emory University.
Andrew Miglietti ’08 (Economics Management major with an Accounting minor) earned his M.B.A. from the Fisher College of Business and is now a senior financial analyst in the Career Foundation Program of the Ford Motor Company.
Gloria Twesigye ’07 (German and International Studies double major with a minor in Economics) was awarded a 2010 Fulbright Scholarship to investigate a program in Germany to rehabilitate Ugandan child soldiers. Prior to heading to Germany for her Fulbright studies, she served for two years in the Peace Corps in the Republic of Cameroon, teaching English to secondary school students.
Evan Reas ’07 (Economics Management major) earned his M.B.A. from Stanford Graduate School of Business and is now founder and CEO of Hawthorne Labs in Palo Alto, California.
Britton Lombardi ’07 (International Business and Spanish double major) completed a senior-year internship with Jeanne Hogarth of the Federal Reserve Board in the Division of Consumer and Community Affairs and co-authored an article with Hogarth. She is now an associate economist in the economic research department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
Marie Rymut ’07 (Politics and Government and Botany/Microbiology double major) is currently attending Yale School of Medicine and has served as the articles editor of the Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law, and Ethics.
Eric Carpenter ’07 (Theatre major) interned as a senior with OWU’s New York Arts Program. Now a professional actor, his latest show is the off-Broadway production of My Big Gay Italian Wedding. His television credits include Gossip Girl and Law and Order.
Lushani Nanayakkara ’07 (Zoology major, Sri Lanka) earned her master’s of science from Johns Hopkins University. She is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in the biology department at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Rory McHale ’09 (Philosophy and Politics and Government double major) was president of OWU’s student government and is now attending University of California, Berkeley, School of Law.
Jacqueline Barker ’08 (Psychology major) is pursuing a Ph.D. in neuroscience at Yale University and recently co-authored a paper published in the Journal of Neuroscience.
Rachel Ryan Albert ’08 (Psychology major) is a doctoral candidate in the Cornell University developmental psychology program and working in Cornell’s B.A.B.Y. lab, concentrating on the social factors that influence language development.

Kristen Lear ’11 (Pre-Professional Zoology major) earned a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to research conservation of the critically endangered Southern Bent-wing Bat in Australia. The Fulbright Scholar Program is the largest U.S. international exchange program for students, scholars, and professionals in the world.
David Gatz ’10 (a triple major in Pre-Medicine, Biochemistry, and Pre-Professional Zoology) received a 2011 Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship from the NCAA. Gatz was a five-time All-America swimmer and a Rhodes Scholar finalist. Recipients of the Byers Scholarship must have a 3.5 grade-point average, demonstrate evidence of superior character and leadership, and show that participation in athletics has been a positive influence on their personal and intellectual development.
Max Seigal ’09 (Environmental Studies, Zoology, and Economics triple major) of Boulder, Colorado, earned a Fulbright Scholarship to spend 10 months researching the impact of lobster farming on the coastal waters of Vietnam. Max is in the Ph.D. program in microbiology and molecular genetics at Emory University.
