Turning Theory into Practice—A commitment to Real-World learning

OWU Students Say:
“Actually being in China to research issues connected with water shortages and water pollution brings it all to life.”

Competitive, University-funded Theory-to-Practice Grants provide support for members of the OWU community to conduct individual or small-group research projects throughout the world. Students create research proposals, budgets, and plans for sharing results when they return to campus.

If their proposals are accepted, the students travel to research sites as diverse as Brazil, China, Great Britain, India, Crete, or anywhere else their academic interests take them.

It’s all part of Ohio Wesleyan’s emphasis on educating the next generation of culturally aware, globally prepared leaders.

Water Issues in China

Three OWU students visited cities and rural areas in China to study its water crisis related to industrial pollution and drought. Sharif Kronemer ’12 studied health impacts, Guanyi Yang ’13 economic issues, and Kyle Herman ’11 political issues. Yang, from China, served as translator, when needed.

Street Children in India

Addie Hemmen ’12, Perrie Bonner ’11, and Danielle Bonner ’11 spent a month in India interacting with children living on the streets of India and learning about related social and economic issues.

Musica in Austria

A music major and opera enthusiast, Sarah used a Theory-to-Practice Grant to attend an OWU Opera Workshop at Salzburg Music Festival in Salzburg, Austria. She and other participants took voice lessons from professional singers, attended opera performances, visited museums, and discovered the art, music, and culture of Austria.
